What is Balayage?

Balayage is often misinterpreted to be a ‘look’ (most commonly, it is confused with ombre), when in fact, it is a technique. The French word balayage simply means ‘to sweep’, and describes how colour is applied to the hair to achieve completely bespoke results. Ombre, on the other hand, describes the look of a more abstract fade from dark roots to light ends.

Unlike foiling, balayage uses freehand painting and paddling to produce a softer, more natural and less uniform look. It’s perfect for colour contouring and allows your colourist the ultimate freedom to mimic natural sun-kissed highlights, and create seamlessly graduated tone variations.

Also, if you’re looking to minimise the look of harsh regrowth, balayage is a great option. The days of long, stark root stretch are officially over; now we’re using balayage to bring lightness closer to the roots, with subtle fade that makes your regrowth look a lot more forgiving (depending on your natural hair colour of course)!

Our two new Balayage Blonde cut and colour packages were created to help you get the most out of one of our favourite techniques for creating, soft, natural looking colour.
